Thank you for calling out the whiteness when it comes to how the reader is written. As a long time reader of fics in the fandom and Asian woman it was always exciting to find new writers who were POC especially if they were Asian bc I'd hope that maybe the reader would be written as an Asian person making the stories more submersive for me anyways. I mean it would also excite me when the character is written as BIPOC in general and small details like their tanned skin etc was written mainly bc we still live in a society where whiteness is everything. It is perceived as the most beautiful at times and in some cultures what they strive for. So when fic writers specifically write the reader as a person of colour and describe how beautiful their skin is or how beautiful their hair is for me it's a way to deconstruct those toxic ideas of whiteness being the end all be all. Especially in the marvel fandom where a majority of the characters are white.
I understand that some writers just wanna make it general and that's cool too, but I think it's very important to acknowledge that there is a perceived whiteness when the main character is written, it's evident especially when people have moodboards for a fic and it's all white women in the pictures.
I think people who have replied to you need to understand that what you have expressed is very much valid, and there are readers out here who find it difficult to relate or even connect to some of the stories other writers have written bc of the way they have written the main characters. E.g. when they make the reader a sibling of Steve or Bucky.
whiteness is not neutral OR default. and i’m not going to stop saying it. you’re welcome, i’m just trying to fight back against the culture that ejected so many of my amazing peers—i know at least 4 authors of color who have deactivated in the last year because of the racism in fandom, and it makes me literally sick.
i just want them, and others, to know that they deserve space. and they deserve NON-RACIST space.
